RESTON NAMED AS ONE
OF THE NATION'S BEST
HEALTHY PLACES TO RETIRE

Reston's creator, Robert E. Simon (RES-ton), says the town he founded in Fairfax County, Va., is supposed to be, if nothing else, "a collection of all the wonderful things about living." It's a high claim that the planned community seems to do a pretty good job living up to.

The town, about 20 miles from Washington, is Simon's 1960s brainchild, designed to encourage human interaction and whimsy. The European-style plazas foster socializing, outdoor concerts, and farmers' markets in the summer. Over 50 miles of paved walking paths, which weave behind houses, through woods, and under roads, make the entire town pedestrian-accessible. At the old Reston town center, Lake Anne Plaza, townhouses sit atop restaurants and stores, each with a garden on the roof. Its unique layout and amenities also make it one of the most healthful places to retire—Simon himself, still sprightly at 94, lives there.

As you wander through, you are likely to pass one of the many sports facilities that all residents of Reston can use free of charge as members of the unusual homeowners association that governs the town. "It's like being a member of a country club, except you're not part of a club; you're part of a community," says Roger Lowen, a 76-year-old triathlete who has lived in Reston since 1988.

Fairfax County Park Foundation
The Fairfax County Park Foundation is a 501c3 charitable organization that supports the Fairfax County Park Authority. Few people know that parks receive less than 1% of the county’s general fund budget and that fees pay for more than 60% of park operating expenses. The Park Foundation picks up where taxes and fees leave off and helps fund community concerts, facilities and services for people with disabilities, summer camp scholarships for low income children, trail building and open space preservation. 89% of county households with incomes over $100,000 identify themselves as park users, and the Foundation has a variety of sponsorship opportunities for businesses and individuals to link to the 18.6 million people who visit Fairfax County’s parks each year. IN MEMORIAM

James Rossant, the master planner of Reston, died at the age of 81.

The architect, urban planner, artist and former commissioner of the Art Commission of New York City passed away at his home near Condeau, France, from complications related to leukemia.

His work in Reston established one of the first post-war “new towns” in America. The suburban development was inspired by German architect Walter Gropius and the Italian coastal town of Portofino.

Reston was initially created in 1964 by Robert E. Simon whom the town is named after. Rossant designed Lake Anne Plaza, which was the first section of town built.

Rossant also designed the U.S. Navy Memorial at Market Square on Pennsylvania Avenue across from the National Archives.

He graduated from Columbia University, worked at Mayer & Whittlesey and taught at New York University and Pratt Institute.

He worked on the Butterfield House in Greenwich Village, the original master plan for Lower Manhattan and Battery Park City and is largely credited for the preservation of the Soho District in New York City.
