Assistant Vice President, Graduate & Adult Education Marymount University
Marymount University Dr. Donald Shandler is assistant vice president of Graduate and Adult Education at Marymount University and is based at the University’s new Reston Center. He oversees outreach to businesses, government agencies, community organizations and individuals in the Greater Washington Metropolitan Area. In addition, he has administrative responsibility for the Reston Center, which offers evening and weekend graduate programs in business and education, as well as undergraduate programs for those who want to complete a bachelor’s degree. Undergraduate programs include the Bachelor of Business Administration and, for nurses, an online RN-to-BSN.
Honored to serve on the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Shandler is currently co-chair of the Chamber’s Education Committee. He provides leadership for The Education Forum, which has established a platform for area colleges and universities to individually and collectively meet the needs of the Chamber and community, as well as the “Conversations with the Experts” series, which features members of the GRCC Board of Directors who have volunteered to conduct a 90-minute workshops on their areas of expertise.
Reflecting on the role of Marymount’s Reston Center in the community, he points out, “Having quality higher education conveniently available where people live and work enables them to advance their knowledge and careers while working full time. It also strengthens the organizations where they are employed.”
Dr. Shandler has over 25 years of continuous achievement in academic administration, program management, strategic marketing, business development and university teaching. Career highlights include positions as associate professor, assistant vice-chancellor, director of academic affairs, and dean. He has directed large personnel pools of faculty and staff and has managed multi-million dollar budgets. He previously served as assistant vice chancellor, Statewide Programs, University of Maryland, University College; director of Education, National Association of Home Builders; and, director of Continuing Education, Graduate School, USDA.
Dr. Shandler has authored three books, including Competency-based Learning: Designing and Implementing Successful Programs; Reengineering the Training Function: How to Align Training with the New Corporate Agenda; and, From Technical Specialist to Supervisor. He is currently working on a forth book that will be published fall 2008. |
