Colleen and Cooley LLP have been an important reason why Bite Me Cancer was able to be formed quickly and with less foundation dollars needed at the beginning. Cooley LLP took care of the legal work to have the Bite Me Cancer name trademarked/registered and also worked very hard on the 501(c)3 filing for non-profit status. Bite Me Cancer paid the filing fees didn’t have to pay the legal fees, which was of tremendous savings to us. Their knowledge of the paperwork and regulations needed to successfully process the Bite Me Cancer name as well as the IRS filing was extremely important. Due to their expertise, our IRS filing for 501(c)3 took only about 6 months to receive approval. Colleen and Cooley LLP were attentive to details and made sure the submission process went smoothly.
Colleen and Cooley have continued to stay involved as our pro bono legal counsel for the updates and issues that have come up regarding trademark or the 501(c)3 filing. Routinely, we are reaching out to them for their advice and expertise.
We are so grateful that the donations coming in haven’t had to be put towards legal fees. Most recently, another lawyer from Cooley has agreed to be a committee member to help us during his own personal volunteer time. He is involved with our Finance/Operations committee, and is focused on things like updating Bylaws, changing banks, and operational processes.
Colleen was on our first board of directors and has remained a member of our advisory council. Last year, she helped direct a small fundraiser that we had at the J. Crew store in Reston. We are so thankful for our partnership with Cooley LLP.
