1. Why did YMCA Fairfax County/Reston decide to implement a workplace wellness program, and how long has it been in place?
The Y unconditionally has three pillars of business which include youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. At the Y we believe healthy living may start with regular exercise, but since the Y is much more than a gym, we wanted to partner with the Chamber to bring the community and local businesses a 360 degree approach to wellness from exercise, to health education, including workplace options. The Y has been working in the healthy living space the last 16 years in Reston, but specifically the last 3 years we have focused on how the Y can help local business partners and their employees achieve their wellness goals.
2. Was the program developed in-house, or did you use a consultant?
The Wellness Worksite Solution Program was designed internally after listening to small, medium and larger businesses and hearing what they desired to meet their workplace wellness needs.
3. Tell us some of the key components of your wellness program, and any unique aspects you’d like to share about it.
Successful wellness programs for employers are inclusive and accessible to all types of individuals. We believe that successful worksite wellness programming has to have options for Restonians to choose from. Essentially the choices are what make the program successful.
A unique aspect of the Wellness Worksite Solution Program is that the benefits are extended not just to the employees, but to their families as well. While the Y offers a variety of wellness services including employee health fairs, fitness facilities, nutrition services, wellness workshops, seminars and more, participants can also take advantage of the many community events the Y puts on such as Healthy Kids Day, Corporate Challenge, Community Shred and many more.
4. What are some challenges that you’ve had to overcome with your program? How has it evolved over time?
The biggest challenge is to modify programs to different sized organizations based on their goals. But one of the reasons the Y, as a community partner, is successful is because of the ability to never turn any organization or group away based on the inability to pay for a wellness program.
