Reston Useful Services Exchange
Reston USE is a community based timebank in which members provide small services to one another, with payment in the form of hours logged into a database rather than in dollars.
Established in 1975 as a community-based organization, USE enables neighbors to help one another by performing services and repaying in-kind, similar to a bartering system, though not necessarily one-to-one. Members maintain a time bank account by “depositing” hours credited for services performed, and “withdrawing” hours for services used.
USE maintains a central registry of members and services performed. Each member receives a directory of members and the services offered. A private Facebook group is also used to request and offer services. Members report service exchange transactions through a link on the organization’s website.
The beauty of USE is that services can occur at a time and place agreed upon by both parties.
Membership fees are $10 annually per individual or $20 per household.
