Resourceful Women of the GRCC present GIVE. LOVE. LAUGH Story Slam Fundraiser
What is a Story Slam?
A story slam is a live storytelling event similar to a poetry slam or open mic night. It is a fun, low-pressure competition based on the art of storytelling. It puts a dual emphasis on content and performance, encouraging storytellers to focus on what they're saying and how they're saying it. It is an exercise in crafting stories within a set time limit and it's a great, fun social event.
Each of the featured 5 minute stories are judged on the following:- How well the story is told
- How well it is constructed
- How well the story explores, connects and/or reveals some truth about the theme and how well it honors the time limit.
Audience members then vote on their favorite story and the winner is awarded bragging rights.
Here are the five Story-Slam-Tellers:
KEN PLUM
Delegate Ken Plum is the longest-serving member of the Virginia House of Delegates. He represents the 36th District which covers all of Reston and parts of Herndon and Vienna. He was an educator and administrator for Fairfax County Public Schools for nearly thirty years.
Ken is also an amateur magician and frequently requested auctioneer for non-profit causes. He lives in Reston with his wife Jane and is actively involved in the United Christian Parish of Reston. They have four children and six grandchildren.
TOM MADDEN
Visual Impact Productions, LLC (VIP) is a creative video production company with over 25 years of experience in producing creative video campaigns for associations, corporations and small to medium sized business owners. Tom Madden, president, founded the company in 2007 after a successful career with two local production companies. VIP consults with their clients on their media strategy as it relates to recruitment, training, marketing, branding, and overall online video communications. They handle all video production needs to include; scripting, multiple camera packages, teleprompters, mobile studios and event coverage.
Tom is involved in giving back to the local community as a volunteer in various church activities that support programs for the needy.
COLLEEN SHUMAKER
Colleen is creator of Finding The Fantastic a podcast and show whose goal is to help broken people feel valuable and important. Colleen attempts to live her life in a way that can be described as, authentic, compassionate and loving.
SUSAN BANVILLE
Susan is from a Navy family (father pilot for 30 years and she does a lot of work/support for our veterans given this is near/dear to her heart) and grew up on a horse farm near Middleburg, VA. She is a Mortgage Advisor with Embrace Home Loans, licensed in VA, MD, DC, NC, SC, FL and LOVES her job as this allows her to follow one of her main passions – helping people. Susan is very active leader in both the Reston and Loudoun Chambers and this supports another passion – giving back to her community.
DIANE L. HAWORTH
Diane is a Heart-Centered Success coach, speaker, author and founder of the Be Love Principles. She is passionate about combining traditional coaching techniques with deep spiritual truths to help clients tap into their inner wisdom and enjoy a life of more love, peace and freedom. She holds a B.S. in Mass Communications, an MBA and has several coaching certifications including a High Performance Coaching Certification from Brendon Burchard’s High Performance Academy. Her first book, “How to Choose Love When You Just Want to Slap Somebody” was published in 2014 and her TV show, “Heart-Centered Success with Diane L Haworth” airs on Channel 10 in the Northern Virginia area. The Moth Radio project is the originator of the concept and has popularized it on public radio. People from all walks of life and backgrounds share their experiences based on a chosen theme and the goal is to draw in the audience, entertain or inspire them.Images

Entry ticket is $20 if purchased by October 25th, $25 after/at the door.
